Traffic of Ideas

2005

(A site-specific sculpture for the Seattle Arts Commission)

Oversized bronze cast books seemingly topple off a prominent gateway, apparently blown off their perch by a sudden gust of wind, opening and loosing pages in clumps as they fall. The bronze pages, etched with print taken from books written by local writers, are frozen in a moment, where they are being blown out of the books and down the street. The artwork references the merging of artistic, radical and progressive ideas preserved in print with the research and thought preserved in publication. This union creates a stream of imagined complementary and contrasting ideas flowing with and against the traffic of social thought.
